All five Pacific Coast states of the United States and the Western Canadian Province of British Columbia have combined their efforts and interests in oil spill prevention, preparedness and response by establishing the Pacific States/British Columbia Oil Spill Task Force. An oil spill into their shared Pacific waters recognizes no political boundaries and can impact the sensitive and valued marine and coastal resources of multiple jurisdictions. Tank ships and tank barges carry crude oil from Alaska and offshore sources to West Coast refineries, and then carry refined products up and down the coast as well. And thousands of vessels, all carrying fuel and lubricating oils, visit West Coast ports each year. Each vessel as well as each oil handling facility on Pacific waters represents the risk of an oil spill; by cooperating regionally we can reduce those risks and improve our responses.
